PS6 Will Have a Simpler Design and Still Have a Detachable Disc Drive?

September 9, 2025 – Insider Gaming reports that PS6 is planned to have a detachable disc drive when the console launches, with their sources claiming that “the detachable disc drive is here to stay for the next generation”.

Identical to PS5’s launch, players will be able to buy PS6 individually as a digital console or upgrade later by purchasing the detachable disc drive separately.

According to Insider Gaming, Sony Interactive Entertainment is “firm” on the decision because the disc drive for the PS5 “hit all the company’s internal targets”, unless things are changed at the last minute.

“Again, it was reiterated by the source that the decision was made to reduce manufacturing and shipping costs during ‘uncertain times’ (likely referring to the tariff/trade war),” added Insider Gaming.

Insider Gaming also noted that these “uncertain times” have influenced the design of PS6, with the design becoming “much simpler” than PS5 to “maximize efficiency, shipping space, weight, and so on”.

In March 2023, Insider Gaming reports that PS6 won’t launch until at least 2028 if plans stay the same.
