AI Takes Over 70% of Game Illustrator Jobs in China
The rest of world reports that several gaming companies from China are starting to adopt AI technology. Companies like NetEase, Tencent, as well as HoYoverse, have reportedly used this technology in their games with negative reactions from their fans.
Leo Li, a game industry recruiter in Hangzhou, revealed that the number of illustrator jobs decreased by about 70% over the past year. This is not only due to regulatory pressure and a slowing economy in China but also due to the rapid adaptation of AI in the country.
While some players in China feel AI produces “digital carcasses” rather than art, others are more open-minded about technology. However, it is clear that some players still associate human labor with value, especially for premium skins.
As a consumer, I expect there to be labor behind my purchase. Emphasizing that something is made by AI will make people feel that it is cheap.
